Join the Culture Club

When we set out to create a new website for the slap Company, we went into the project knowing it needed to be a place where a community of people could come together and share these stories on a larger scale.
So, I need your help. Join the discussion and share your personal experience as part of a manager, employee or customer culture. Tell us what really worked, tell us what didn’t, tell us what was nuts to even try.

When I was a director at one of the old regional phone companies, we went through an incredibly tough transition during which all the rules changed. A company that was full of people drawn to the stability and predictability of a utility was trying to change its culture to be more agile and responsive. As an incentive, the company was no longer encouraging 30-year careers but was promoting pay for performance and promising to equip managers for their next job at another company. So, you had the wrong people, incented in ways that were inconsistent with their values being asked to do new things. Can you say train wreck? They could have used your book.
My district manager once made the comment that 'petty employee theft' should be considered a fringe benefit for front-line employees. What?! I was a low-level manager and this guy was the only superior I ever got to see face-to-face. Geez, I felt 'alone'.
I have tried to read countless (so-called) leadership and management books. Until "Bury My Heart", I have failed. At the beginning of your book, it says the ideas contained inside will change your life. You were not kidding.
I am a supervisor (entry level) at a Fortune 500 company. In 1 week, the global management team comes to my site for the quarterly review. I am passing along copies of your book to all my managers.
I work for an incredible company. But, companies can't afford to not recognize the power behind your ideas.
Now, no matter the little mistakes along the way, my biggest failure will be to not implement these feelings at my company.(yes, I have feelings - & while I am at work!!)
Thank you for such a powerful & empowering message.
